International reach

Working with a select group of international rescuers that we trust and have evaluated to ensure that the dogs are in good health and have a good temperament.

Our mission is to help death-row, abused,
and neglected dogs find
forever homes.

My name is Melody, I was born in Taiwan where animals and dogs were not treated the same as they are here in the states. During a trip back when I was 13, I witnessed dogs with missing paws from traps, skin and bones covered in wounds from abuse and neglect. It was at that time where I met a skinny stray with eyes full of hope wanting nothing more than to fill her empty tummy. I wasn’t able to save that poor dog, but I made a promise that the moment I could, I would rescue one in her honor.

Though it took a few years, I was finally able to fulfill that promise and started the International Rescue Program including our Puppy Mill Rescue Program. Since starting we have been saving dogs from puppy mills while working to help permanently shut them down.

From puppy mills to caring families

From Northern California to communities around the world, Love and Second Chances rescues dogs from euthanasia lists, abuse, and neglect both locally and abroad, ensuring they have the chance to start over.

Every dog we save is welcomed into a caring home environment with safe spaces, emotional recovery, and the trust needed to prepare them for adoption.

With both local and international rescue programs, our team reaches across borders to help those most in need—proving that compassion has no limits, and that every act of kindness can change a life.

You can change their lives

There were many challenges through the years but our rescue continued to grow with the support we gained along the way. Since starting, we have saved and placed over 5000 dogs. We don’t discriminate by breed, age, or special needs. We rescue seniors from overcrowded shelters and give them peace through hospice so their final days are in comfort. With the help of our amazing community, we’re given the opportunity to continue making a difference every day. No one said it would be easy, they only said it would be worth it!

A happy new family

The story of Ara

Rescued in March 2025

When wildfire swept through leaving destruction in its path, rescue rushed to assist and found dogs burned, injured and chained with no means of escape. Many didn’t survive but Ara did. A family’s backyard dogs had all perished in the flames…except for one little survivor. According to neighbors, this puppy had always been left out, tied up away from her mom and siblings who were kept caged together on the property. It was that isolation sadly that saved her life leaving her as the sole survivor.

My family just adopted a sweet dog (who turned out to be a rescue from Korea which is my family's mother country) through Love & Second Chances. The whole process was very thoughtful and professional. It was my family's first time adopting through them and it won't be our last.

We have adopted two Formosan Mountain Dogs from Love and Second Chances. We love the agency so much that I recommend them to everyone I see. Melody and her LSC team (including the fosters) work so hard to find every dog their forever homes. We will forever use LSC for our future adoptions!
